Completed comparative and other research projects

The purpose of CEMAT’s comparative research is to identify characteristics distinctive to individual emerging economies, and analyze their generalizability to other emerging economies.  Comparative research is conducted both in independent research projects and as a part of larger international development projects.

High-tech entrepreneurs’ success strategies in different cultural contexts

The research project coordinated by the European University at St. Petersburg analyzes success stories of high-tech entrepreneurs in Finland, Russia, South Korea and Taiwan. CEMAT was responsible for the research activities conducted in Finland. The aim of the project was to find out, what are the personal characteristics of successful high-tech entrepreneurs in different cultures, and what is the role of the local innovation system in the entrepreneurial process. In addition to the country-level analysis, the research addressed sub-national variation within Russia. This was done by implementing the study in four culturally, geographically and institutionally different locations (St. Petersburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk and Tomsk).

University students’ perceptions of entrepreneurship in the Baltic Sea Region

We have conducted research on this topic as part of EU-funded projects, led by the Small Business Center of the Aalto University School of Economics. In the Tacis-funded project Entrepreneurship Development (2007-2008) we analyzed St. Petersburg university students’ perceptions of entrepreneurship, and compared them with data on Finnish students. In the project (2009-2012) funded by the CREAENT - Central Baltic Sea - program, we implemented a comparative study on Finnish, Estonian, Latvian and Swedish art university students’ and young creative industry entrepreneurs’ perceptions of entrepreneurship in collaboration with Tallinn University of Technology, Stockholm School of Economics in Riga, and University of Tartu. During 2012, we conducted  a similar inquiry for art students in St. Petersburg in cooperation with the St. Petersburg unit of Higher School of Economics.
